IGF Code Course: A Complete Guide to Basic and Advanced Training

What is the IGF Code?

IGF stands for the International Code of Safety for Ships Using Gases or Other Low-Flashpoint Fuels. It was adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and entered into force on 1 January 2017. The Code sets mandatory design, construction and operational standards for ships that use low-flashpoint fuels -that is, fuels with a flashpoint below the traditional 60°C threshold.

In simple terms, the IGF Code covers gas-fuelled ships (other than gas carriers, which fall under the separate IGC Code). As LNG bunkering infrastructure grows and owners commit to decarbonisation, the number of IGF Code ships in the global fleet continues to rise -and with it, the demand for properly trained crew.

Why IGF Code training is mandatory

Handling low-flashpoint fuel is not the same as handling heavy fuel oil. Gases can be cryogenic, they can form flammable or toxic vapour clouds, and they behave very differently during bunkering and in an emergency. Recognising this, the STCW Convention (as amended in Manila) introduced mandatory training requirements under Regulation V/3 and Section A-V/3.

Under these rules, seafarers serving on IGF Code ships must hold evidence of the appropriate level of training before they take up their duties. There are two distinct levels.

Basic IGF Code training

Basic training for IGF Code ships is intended for seafarers who have safety or operational duties associated with the fuel and fuel systems, but who are not in immediate charge of the fuel’s use.

Typical topics covered in a Basic IGF Code course include:

  • The properties and hazards of low-flashpoint fuels
  • Fundamentals of ship fuel and fuel-handling systems
  • Safe bunkering and gas-handling procedures
  • Fire prevention, firefighting and controlling leaks
  • Personal safety, protective equipment and safe working practices
  • Basic emergency response

This level gives ratings and support crew the foundational awareness they need to work safely around low-flashpoint fuel systems.

Advanced IGF Code training

Advanced training for IGF Code ships is aimed at masters, engineer officers and any personnel with immediate responsibility for the care and use of fuels and fuel systems on board.

An Advanced IGF Code course builds on the Basic content and goes deeper into:

  • Detailed operation and monitoring of fuel systems and control equipment
  • Safe management of bunkering operations
  • Precautions to prevent hazards specific to low-flashpoint fuels
  • Managing emergencies, including gas leaks, fire and system failures
  • Regulatory and documentation requirements
  • Risk assessment and safe-work planning for fuel operations

Because these officers make the real-time decisions that keep the vessel safe, the Advanced level demands a stronger, hands-on understanding of the systems involved.

Basic vs Advanced IGF Code: which one do you need?

The level you require depends on your rank and shipboard responsibilities:

  • If you have general safety duties related to the fuel system, Basic IGF Code training is typically the requirement.
  • If you have immediate responsibility for the fuel and its systems -such as engineers and senior officers -the Advanced level applies.

Many seafarers building a career on gas-fuelled vessels ultimately complete both, progressing from Basic to Advanced as they take on more responsibility.
